Choices

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

Albus Dumbledore

Obviously the work of J.K. Rowling. When I wrote this down, I didn't think it was important to specify which book it came from. If you're sure (I think I know), give me a head's up.

okay, I'm not 100% sure, but I am pretty sure that's from book 6. I've been rereading the books with my boyfriend (it's his first time!), and I haven't gotten to that quote yet. We're currently on book 5.

Came on over here from yes and yes. I'm in teacher school (as a grad student who has done lots of informal teaching) and noticed your mention of subbing. I had a brief stint last year and never managed to land a day in a public school, but I subbed lots at the private school where my boyfriend works.

anyway, just thought I'd say hi! and, yes, great quote :-)

Do you attribute a quote to a fictional character, or do you attribute it to the author of the work? I'm not being an ass, I'm actually curious.

It's book six. It's during Dumbledore's rant where Harry finally realizes the difference between him and Voldemort.

And it's one of my favorites. Along with the one in book one where Dumbledore says, "Humans have a knack for choosing precisely the things that are worst for them." So very, very true.

Penn - Hi! Substituting is my sole income right now, but I'm a certified teacher just waiting for her perfect job. ;) I love new readers, so thanks!

Hawk - It's typical, and probably more correct, to attribute quotations to the author rather than the character, but Dumbledore is a rather iconic character. I also think this particular quotation carries more weight coming from him than from the author who put the words in his mouth. Usually I prefer to attribute quotes to the author.

B - That quote was on the same page in my quote journal. I had to choose between them. But I like that one a lot, too.

Amen. I choose to treat others with respect. I choose to live, love, and laugh with friends. Great quote.
