Do I Look Mean to You?

Today I spent five hours at work shelving books. Shocker, right? Nic, you do work in a bookstore. Yes, yes, but up until a few weeks ago, my job did consist of a little bit more than just shelving books. Now this is apparently all that I'm good for.

Our district manager was in the store - with the Store Manager, Speedy - helping to prepare for the Regional Manager's visit. This is a big deal for reasons that are beyond me. As long as we sell books and aren't a drain on the company as a whole, we must be doing things right. Right? I guess people worry about these things. So I'm walking through the store, being my short, efficient self, when Speedy waves me over.

"So, District Manager asked me if you were friendly earlier. And I said 'yes, why?' Do you know what he said?"
"No, Speedy, I don't know what he said." (I was a bit annoyed that I had to talk to him; Speedy is not my favorite person of late.)
"He said that he'd been in here all day and you hadn't said hi to him yet."
"He is lying like a hooker!" I look around to make sure that I didn't say that in front of any customers. The fact that I said it in front of Speedy doesn't register at all. "I did too say hi to him!"
"Did you really?"
"Yes!"
"Okay! I believe you! Maybe he just forgot."
I move to walk away. Speedy stops me. "Just don't say anything to him about it."
I look at him strangely. "Okay...." Generally, I couldn't care less what District Manager thinks about me. He doesn't control my paycheck or my hours, and it isn't like I'm looking to move up in the company. Who gives a rat's ass if he thinks I'm not friendly?

Twenty minutes later I came around the end of a shelf and almost walked into District Manager. I pasted my biggest cheerleader smile on my face and said "HI!"

I then considered going directly to the liquor store after I left work.

Meet the Players

This is an update on my old "Cast of Characters." After a year, there are some new people and some people that I don't care about any more.

Nic That's me! I am very short and very loud to make up for it. I have the degree to teach high school English, but I have no job. I work at Giant Bookstore.

Bradshaw The best friend. She lives three hours away in St. Louis, much to my chagrin. She is fantastic and we love her.

Gallagher A girl I work with who I've been spending increasing amounts of time with. Our best times come when alcohol is involved.

Guy From Work (GFW) He just moved, so he probably won't appear a lot, but he's been rather important to me as of late.

Racer Boy My 6'7" guy friend. He's very chill, which makes him pretty fantastic in my book.

Dread Still very tall, very big, and would crush someone if I said the word. We like that.

Tall Girl We worked together, but she's moving to Kansas City. Whether she's here or not, I heart her.

B. Another guy from work (seeing the theme, right?). He is my parents' age, but he's cool and we have some pretty good conversations in the parking lot.

Hot Coffee Boy (HCB) The barrista at the Starbucks I went to every morning for the four months I student taught. I learned his name, but I still call him HCB. To everyone. All the time. I am not allowed to patronize that particular Starbucks unless I look hot.

Giant Bookstore (and associates) The place and the people are likely to be referenced often since I'm there a lot. The five managers are Speedy (because he sneaks up on me), Schizo (because she is), Mr. Chill (because he is), Bubbles (a ditz if I've ever seen one in charge of something), and J (who is my favorite and doesn't have to have a disparaging nickname).

These are the major players in my life. Some other major locations will appear (The Pub. Gallagher's Apartment. Starbucks.)

Long Time Gone

I haven't blogged in nearly a year. A year people. When I started my last semester of classes, I put a moratorium on the blog for a couple of reasons. 1) I had very little time to play with it, and 2) One of my classes was using blogger and I didn't want this blog tracked down by anyone in class (just in case I talked about them).

Since it has been almost a year, there are a few things that have happened that you, gentle reader, should probably be aware of.*

Bradshaw is still living in St. Louis. I still miss her because, shockingly for me, we are still friends.
I am still working at Giant Bookstore. Until recently, I loved my job. Within the last few weeks, it has started to make me a bitter little girl.
I met a boy. Quiet internal drama ensued.
I spent the last four months student teaching and realized that I do love it. I have been unable to find a teaching job for next year, much to my chagrin.
I graduated from college. I am the first person in my entire family to ever do that. I am indeed proud.

I am determined to give you as few updates as humanly possible, mostly because they are as tedious for you to read as they are for me to write. You will receive updated information as it is necessary, and if you don't like it, you can suck it.** I am, however, going to try to be timely and interesting with my posts. If you have any questions/requests, please let me know and I will do my best to oblige.

*As if my readers were ever capable of being described as gentle.
**I know, I'm such a sweetheart. You know you love it.
